A year of being #Here For Nurses

Celesio UK CEO, Toby Anderson talks about the importance of supporting the nursing profession

I am very aware that all clinicians face pressure everyday as they continue to put patient needs first despite the challenges of healthcare and in many cases, limited resources.

At Celesio UK, our family includes doctors and nurses as well as the thousands of pharmacists within our LloydsPharmacy network.  Within LloydsPharmacy Clinical Homecare we employ nearly 350 nurses around the country who visit patients in their own homes, delivering care to more than 70,000 patients.  Our MASTA nurses are specialists in vaccination and provide comprehensive travel health consultations to thousands of travellers every year via an extensive UK wide network of dedicated clinics.

Whether it’s straightforward delivery of medication, providing travel vaccinations or specialist nursing for complex conditions, I know that our nurses – like their colleagues worldwide – are dedicated professionals who day in and day out focus entirely on the health and wellbeing of others.

I am therefore delighted that we are the primary partner for the Cavell Star Awards run by Cavell Nurses’ Trust and this month marks a year of our relationship.  The charity supports UK nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants, both working and retired, when they’re suffering personal or financial hardship often due to illness, disability, older age and domestic abuse.  Most of us know at first hand the value that nurses bring to us and our loved ones when we need help.  It is therefore essential that we show our support for them when they need it most.

Thanks to the work of the Trust, nursing professionals can be supported through difficult times in their lives so that they become happier, healthier and are able to stay in or return to work.

  • 75% of nursing professionals said the support they received from Cavell Nurses’ Trust helped them get back to, or stay in, work
  • 97% believed that the support they received positively affected their mental health

Cavell Star Awards is a national programme to acknowledge nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants who show exceptional care to patients, their colleagues and patients’ families.  Through our association with the Awards’ programme, we have seen some of the shining examples of the profession and I am proud that we can do this small thing to support nurses.  I’m proud to say that some of our own nurses are also recipients of Cavell Star Awards.

And in these cost conscious times, especially in the NHS, when budgets are squeezed and everyone questions value, we know that environments with strong nursing deliver the best patient outcomes.  And that delivers a more efficient health service.  It’s a win-win. You can’t put a price on the value of a nurse sitting down to talk to a patient, speaking to their family or just spending a bit of time with someone.  That value is infinite.

I’d like to thank every nurse for what they do for us, their patients and their colleagues.  Just like the Cavell Nurses’ Trust, we will continue to be Here For Nurses.
