LloydsPharmacy Pharmacist announced as regional winner in Royal Pharmaceutical Society Competition
David Halliwell, Pharmacist at LloydPharmacy Douglas has been voted Regional Winner in the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s ‘I Love My Pharmacist’ competition.
Eighteen regional finalists from across Great Britain were selected by an expert panel for striving to provide the best patient care. They were put to the public vote for six weeks with David being declared Northern England Regional Winner after securing the highest number of votes.
The National Winner title for I Love My Pharmacist 2015 was awarded to hospital pharmacist Emily Rose. Emily is based at Southmead Hospital in Bristol and was chosen as this year’s winner due to her outstanding contribution to rheumatoid arthritis care.
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society aims to recognise the unsung heroes of the health service who work alongside GPs, nurses and hospital staff, providing expert advice and crucial services such as medication reviews and stop smoking services. The professional body representing pharmacists across Great Britain set out to find Britain’s most loved pharmacist – the pharmacist who goes the extra mile for their community.
David was initially shortlisted for his outstanding contribution to the care of his patients. He and his team deliver supplies and services to patients in their own home as well as to care homes, for example medicine monitored dose devices which help patients take the right medicines on the right day. The pharmacy provides free blood pressure and diabetes checks, as well as operating both cholesterol testing and smoking cessation services.
The sheer dedication and commitment David has for his patients was demonstrated earlier this year when he remarkably went above and beyond to provide support to a young patient. David hand delivered medication for a child, from the Isle of Man to Euston, London before the patient went on holiday to Europe with his family. The family were extremely touched and grateful for his efforts.
David said, “I am delighted to be the winner for Northern England. My patients are my number one priority and I’m really humbled and honoured that so many of them have come forward to vote for me.
“This is a fantastic competition run by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. So many people don’t understand the full range of services that are offered by pharmacists, and I Love My Pharmacist helps to raise awareness of the patient care we deliver every day. We are so much more than dispensers, and it’s the quality time that I’m able to spend with my patients that really makes it all worthwhile to me.”
“I’ve been overwhelmed by the messages of encouragement and support from the local community. It has created a lot of buzz in the pharmacy and it’s really great to see how interested patients have been in the competition. It means a lot to me and the team at LloydsPharmacy Governors Hill.”
One of David’s patients commented, “The fantastic aspect about the pharmacy is that David is very approachable and easy to talk to, whatever the problem may be, which makes all the difference to my day.”
Neal Patel, Pharmacist and Head of Corporate Communications at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society said, “Pharmacists are an integral part of every local health service and all the winners demonstrate dedication above and beyond the call of duty.
“Having access to expert, personalised advice is invaluable; pharmacists also support patients in settings including hospitals and GP practices. We want to celebrate the important role pharmacists play across the NHS.
“We are delighted with the public engagement with I Love My Pharmacist 2015, and I’d like to thank those who have taken the time to vote over the past six weeks.”
